Nelson Mandela Day

14.7.2019

Blessings to those who wish to serve the marginalized people of the community!

As you may know, in July STC attempts to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela who was born on the 18th July. To support his legacy we want to contribute to the World Wide Nelson Mandela International Day of Service. STC wants to support this international event for an entire week from today to Sunday 21 July. We would like to suggest that sometime during this week you all look around your neighbourhood, community, friends, your street; And find some project to serve others. If you would like to participate, and agree to try to find a project to help someone, we have a non-binding signup on our website to encourage your support. If your project could use some help, mention your needs in the comment section, and we will share it with the STC community. https://www.servethecitygeneva.ch/current-activities/

If you mange to complete a service project of interest, feel free to mention a bit about it on our facebook page.

WHAT IS MANDELA DAY?

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” – Nelson Mandela

Mandela Day calls on us all, every day, to make the world a better place. Each year on 18 July we look back on what has been done, and forward to what will be done.

Making every day a Mandela Day celebrates Madiba’s life and legacy in a sustainable way that will bring about enduring change.

There is so much to learn about this very special man and what he stands for: Here is a slight insight. Nelson Mandela info

Wednesday 12 June 8am to 12 noon, Carouge

Friday 21 June 8am to 12 noon, Carouge

Signup at: ServeTheCityGeneva.ch (more details will be sent prior to the event).

As for the collection itself, here is a message from the organizers:

We wish to express our deep gratitude for the support by all our volunteers offered on the 24 and 25 May.

Thanks to your tremendous commitment to the 80 stores and supermarkets participating in this action and to the solidarity of the people of Geneva, between 3pm on Friday and 6pm on Saturday 18h a total of 148,425 tonnes of goods were collected! This food helps to feed over 1000 people a day.

We were once again able to count on a magnificent level of participation: more than 800 volunteers, representing various companies, clubs, associations and the general population of Geneva, took part in supermarkets across the city on Friday afternoon and all day Saturday.

Everyone at the Partage Association thanks you warmly for your precious commitment and loyalty, without which this action would not be possible.

THANK YOU!

Next collection: November 23, 2019

Coordinatrice des bénévoles

From Serve the City’s perspective, this weekend was a strange one. We had 66 volunteers, but a record 13 cancellations and no-shows, two people got sick (one on the job, while the other had to leave to attend to a sickness at home), and one volunteer got injured on the way home after their shift… But what this means is that the rest of you stepped up and made it work with reduced staff!! So hats off to everyone, many thanks from all of us here at Serve the City. It was a great day for those in need and of course we appreciate the generosity of all those shoppers who pitched in. Geneva should be proud!!

My [Gary’s] wife took a fall heading home and I missed the last few hours of the day in the medical centre getting her stitched up, so again thanks everyone for stepping up and closing down with few instructions.

For those who didn’t show up, please bear in mind that this causes huge problems for us, the other volunteers, our partners and ultimately the beneficiaries. If you still want to be on the mailing, let us know.

Again thanks to all and we hope to see you all again sometime.

Gary and the STC team.
