Serve The City Geneva

Early PARTAGE signups requested!

(16.4.2019 )

Dear volunteers

Samedi du Partage

As you may know, twice a year in Geneva over 70 supermarkets participate in a very special event called Samedi du Partage during which over 350 tonnes of food is collected to feed the hungry of the community. Serve the City normally provides about 50 volunteers across the Friday afternoon and the Saturday to serve in five different stores. This year’s first collection is happening on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 May.

We would like to gauge the interest of STC volunteers for this project in late May, so if there is a good chance you might help out on one of the two days, please sign up now. If we reach 50 volunteers quickly, we will then offer to help in more stores. Each store will disappear from the sign-up list as it fills up, but you can always sign up for the “Use me where needed” option. When signing up for a Saturday shift, please indicate your time preference (8am-12pm, 12-3pm, or 3-6pm).

This year we will be participating on Friday 24 May at Migros Meyrin (6 people, from 3-7.30pm) and

on Saturday 25 May at Aldi Chêne-Bourg (2 per shift), Aldi Petit-Lancy (4), Coop Grand-Saconnex (2) and Migros Meyrin (8).

Sorting clothes to be given away

Carrefour-Rue runs a clothes shop called Aboudaby that gives donated clothes to disadvantaged people in Geneva. They are looking for six volunteers to help sort clothes on Saturday 4 May from 9am to 12pm at Aboudaby, 154 Rte. de Malagnou. Coffee and tea will be provided. For more information, see https://www.carrefour-rue.ch/cr.php?p=acti&s=aboudaby”. Sign up on the Current Activities page.

Serve the City thanks you for your service to the community!!

Special request to serve the homeless people of Geneva.

The Salvation Army has many projects each year to help the marginalized of the city. Now is a chance to step up and participate in a new special project.

On Easter Sunday , 21 April :

From 11h until 15h we will offer brunch to all those who wish to: “Place des Grottes”. On site there will be tables, benches for people to sit down to eat. There will be music groups, children’s entertainment and a buffet that volunteers will offer to people. For food we thought, cold pasta salad or cold rice, fruit, cakes, cold cuts, etc. Ideally, if it would be convenient for you to bring what is possible around 11am. Also, people who come can also participate in brunch and come with their family and children. Basically it’s a great moment of conviviality with all the people who want it.

Do sign up on the STC website and let us know what you would like to bring. English speakers are welcome, but a little French will also be helpful.

ENSEMBLE MULTIPLIONS L’ESPOIR!!!

March Newsletter

(20.03.2019)

Dear volunteers,

Serve the City welcomes you to come and help your local community this spring!

Montbrillant soup kitchen

STCG needs additional volunteers for the soup kitchen at the Jardin de Montbrillant (behind Gare Cornavin). We need more volunteers to commit to alternate Tuesdays from 9am to 1pm. Additionally, it would be great to have a couple of standby volunteers on board to step up when needed.

Please sign up today! When you sign up, let us know in the “Comments” section whether you wish to be a regular volunteer or a standby volunteer.

The next soup kitchen is on Tuesday 26 March.

Le 5ème Jour

Saturdays from April to June

Le 5ème Jour (“The 5th Day”) restaurant opened in Eaux-Vives in 2018, combining innovative cuisine, healthy and sustainable food and humanitarian principles. From Tuesday to Friday, it functions as a regular restaurant. On Saturdays (i.e. the fifth day), the chef provides a free gastronomic meal exclusively for those in need: refugees, the homeless and the disadvantaged.

We are looking for 10 volunteers to join our team of Serve the City helpers for April, May and June. Each week, two volunteers will help to serve the meal and interact with guests, making them feel welcome and giving them a chance to tell their stories. One of the two volunteers needs to speak French, and other languages are also useful.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to serve on 3 or 4 Saturdays during the 3-month period. If interested, please sign up on the Serve The City website.

– A Project Liaison Manager is being sought for this project, to be the contact point with the charity organisations who invite the guests who participate each week. French and English required. If this could be you, please mention your interest in the comments section of the event’s sign-up page.

Bellevue Zoo project

The Parc-Challandes.ch zoo in Bellevue needs our help! This facility was established with the goal of introducing school children to a wide variety of animals and rehabilitating injured animals. • We need people with plenty of energy and basic woodworking skills (tools will be provided but extra saws would be appreciated).
  • Please bring your own lunch, but drinks and snacks will be provided.

Saturday 25 May, 9am – 1pm (6-8 people), parrot enclosure:

  • Deconstruction of branches and positioning of new ones.
  • Please bring your own lunch, but drinks and snacks will be provided.

La Garenne zoo

Wednesday 17 April, 9.30am to 3.30pm,

La Garenne is another wildlife rescue park in the mountains over Nyon. This project makes a great place for a family outing, contributing to the park’s development and maintenance in various ways. A variety of tasks are on offer, including planting, cleaning, installing drainage pipes and more. We are looking for about 10 volunteers. Lunch will be provided, and anyone who can only make a half-day will also be welcome.
